Speedy Rat!

May 16th, 2025 by The Rat

ratty-starting-line.jpg

Well, after my encounter with the scale yesterday, and all your good advice about exercise, I realized I’d better get in shape in a hurry.  I mean, sure, I’m a speedy rat–more or less–but after gaining all that extra weight, am I speedy enough to outrun a CAT?  Maybe not!

So I thought I’d go out for track and run off some of that excess flab.  And here I am, ready to scamper!  What do you think of my snazzy new jersey and shoes?

I have to say, though, it was hard to find track shoes that fit.  I mean, it isn’t easy to find a size 1/16 AAAAAAA.  We are talking looooooong and naaaaaaarow, here.  Plus my toes are very pointy.  I need plenty of room for my claws, or I just feel cramped.  And as every runner knows, toe cramps are a very bad thing.

So, do any of you have problems with toe cramps?  Tail cramps?  Whisker droop?  What about when you’re running very hard, and the person in front of you kicks up a piece of gravel the size of your head?  Sports are fun, but sometimes they’re painful!  Have YOU ever had that experience?  What did you do?

Hello Ratty, so glad to hear from you again! I’m so glad that you found ways to lose weight, and yes I have had that experience before one time in one of my soccer games I got kicked right in the face with the ball but I kept on going. I have a question so when you bite someone twice what if a different mouse bit the same person would it still count as a third bite??

  2. Gaby Says:

Hi Ratty, hope your doing well! I saw your not so fat anymore! hopefully you will be able to release that diet book I bet a lot of rodents will find it useful! But to answer your question yes I have had toe cramps before (I hate when I do) But I haven’t had an experience of pain in sports because I don’t play sports but when I’m at recess it I get hurt a lot! bye bye :p

Hello ratty, I can tell it’s pretty hard to find that size for you shoes. Maybe you should go and visit my friend Aspen’s rat store. I also happen to have toe cramps DAILY. I’m just like Joe, I love to play soccer. But these practices are extremely complex and hurt your legs a bunch. And what did I do? I had to forget about the pain because I had practice the next day.

i don’t like sport either they are soooooooooooooooooooo exhausting and kinda overrated . ANYWAY now that you found your sister ,are you planning on doing any sibling bonding activities with her? ( including but not limited to):fishing, cooking, walks, and playing games together!

(p.s)Jayda is a VEGAN cat so no need to be afraid / from friend of a cat , LEAH

G’day, everybody! Natalia, Gaby, Sabrina, Leah, it’s ratly good to hear from you again!

Hey, Natalia, thanks–I think I might have dropped a whole ounce already! Sorry to hear about your soccer-face-ball issue–that must have huuuurt. But you were aas brave as a RAT and you kept right on going, so yay, you! About your question, I have no idea. It wouldn’t count as a third bite from ME, that’s for sure. But what effect would a bite from a different mouse have? It would depend on the mouse, and what powers it might have! (And very few rodents actually HAVE powers. I’m kind of a rare rat.)

Gaby, I’m doing pretty well, thanks, now that my toe cramps have (mostly) gone away! And I’m back to working on my diet book… so far I’ve almost written the introduction. It’s all about (you guessed it) MEEEEEE! And who wouldn’t want to read that? But I’m really sorry to hear about your toe cramps, and getting hurt at recess, too. No fun at all–I feel your pain!

Hello, Sabrina, you’re so right, it’s not too easy to find shoes my size! But I finally looked on Ratazon, and there was this site called RatSport. And they had some very snappy-looking choices for shoes! But if those shoes don’t turn out, for sure I’ll try Aspen’s Rat Store. So sorry to hear about your toe cramps (you have them EVERY DAY?? Yowza!) But if you like soccer, we’re a lot alike, because I like pawball! And I try to forget about the pain when my poor ratty feet hurt… but I’m not always ratsucessful, you know?

Hiya, Leah, so sorry to hear you don’t like sports, but I get it. I, personally, do not like toe cramps, getting my fur pulled, or getting my tail stomped on!! (But I still love pawball. Don’t ask me why.) And I love to hang out with Sissy, but we have very different interests–so mostly when we’re together we just talk about old times. And wonder where our Ratmommy is, and if she broke her ratty heart when she came back to the nest and found we were gone. (We already knew where our Ratdad was… he got crunched by a cat. Is it any wonder why I can’t stand cats?)

  6. Sebastian Says:

Hi ratty, I see that you have started exercise! That’s great! And to answer your question on if I have gotten injured while playing sports, I have. I got injured when I was playing soccer. So some random guy ABSOLUTELY OBLITERATED MY ANKLE! It hurt SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BAD. So, Ratty I REALLY hope that you don’t play soccer with grown-ups. Bye 🙂

  7. Donis Says:

Hellooooo Ratson, (Yes I know your name now) I really like your jersey and you fast shoes. I never got a toe cramp but I did twist my ankle not so long ago. But I put some ice and got a brace sock. But you CAN’T do that for a cramp. GOOD LUCK

P.S hope you cramps are ok

  8. Reyna Says:

Hi ratty! I’m happy to hear that you are trying to do something productive! To answer your question, no, I’ve never have a cramp while running. I personally like to run because is really fun and it challenges myself! I hope you continue running and that you can run faster than a cat!
P.S I hope you also enjoy running like me!

  9. Aspen Says:

Hello ratty again I actually made a rat store specifically for rats if you wanted to know but I also do not have tail cramps.. Considering I’m not a rat I’m actually a human being but also answering your other question yes I most definitely had that experience one time someone hit my head with a fat huge volleyball I just let it slide though because I didn’t really care.

  10. The Rat Says:

Hello, hello, Sebastian, Donis, Rayna and Aspen, thanks for writing back!

Yeah, Sebastian, I’ve started running, and also (just today) pumped some IRON! So you can ratgratulte me. And it’s great you like soccer, but…yeeeouch! Your ankle got obliterated, seriously?? I hope the other guy felt SORRY, at least! But don’t worry–I am not ratstupid enough to play pawball with grownups. I don’t want to get squished FLAT. (Then I wouldn’t be able to write to you guys! Plus, it would really hurt.)

Hey, Donis, thanks for writing, but I have to tell you– my name is actually Raston. As in Rassssssss-ton. (Or Rasty, as some like to call me!) Yeah, I know, “Rat-son” might seem logical, but it’s not really my name. But thanks for liking my jersey and shoes! I do like to be a sporty (yet fashionable) rat, you know? I’m so sorry about your twisted ankle, but ice and a brace sock sounds like it might really help. I hope it did! And my toe cramps are much better, thanks for caring.

Hi, Reyna, you betcha I’m productive! I’m a productive rat machine! I’m ratly glad that you never get toe cramps (I wouldn’t wish them on any rodent–or human, either.) It’s cool that you like to run, though. Are you running away from anything, like, say, something FELINE? With CLAWS? That’s my goal–to run faster than a CAT. I guess on a straightaway, I might not run as fast, but I’m much better at dodging and juking off to one side or the other, and suddenly darting into a hole!

Hello Aspen–wow, you actually made a rat store especially for rats like MEEEEE? Thank you so much, that’s ratastic! And I’m so happy to hear that you do not suffer from tail cramps. (Ever had toe cramps, though? Humans do have toes, I think.) For sure I know humans have heads, and I’m so sorry that your poor head got hit with a BIG FAT VOLLEYBALL! I don’t understand how you could ratpossibly not care, but I’m proud of you!

  11. Benji Says:

Hey Ratty, of course I have gotten cramps before, I play football! What you should do if you get a cramp, you should ice it, stretch , or get a massage. Glad to help.

    From , Benji

  12. cam Says:

Hello Ratty, you look good in the jersey and the shoes I bet you go fast those shoes. Yes I have had a bad injury I had a toe cramp but I also got a concussion from football. Also if you start track I will be your #1 fan!

  13. Ariel Says:

Hi Ratson! Well, to answer your question no I don’t know anything about tail cramps, or whisker droop. Because, I don’t have any of those. But with toe cramps I recommend either finding NEW shoes, or having NO shoes! And yes, I do like your Jersey and shoes. I think it’s GREAT that your exercising! Taking care of yourself is VERY healthy. I think the number on your scale will go DOWN after your exercising mission!
Anyways… for my question today, have you and your sister ever fought? I fight with my siblings all the time. What about you? Have you and your sister always gotten along like you do now?

  14. The Rat Says:

A big ratty hello to you, Benji, Cam and Ariel!

Benji, I don’t play football (can’t seem to find a helmet small enough), but it’s too bad you get muscle cramps from playing it. Still, it’s fun, right? And I took your advice right away. I got an ice cube (one was more than enough), then I streeeeeeetched my toes up, down, forward, back, and side to side. It looked a little funny; Sissy even thought I was creating a new dance! But when I told her about the cramps, she was nice enough to give me a paw massage, too. And my toes feel better, thanks!

Hello Cam, thanks for the compliment–I DO look good in my jersey and shoes, don’t I? Sadly, though, Emmy’s hair gel didn’t hold up too well in the breeze. You can’t have everything in this rat’s life. Sorry to hear about your toe cramp, and your concussion! Does your poor head still hurt? Is it still round, or did it get a little flattened where you got hit? Anyway, it doesn’t seem to have affected your writing ability, and thanks– I needed a #1 fan!

Hi, Ariel, so nice to hear from you! And you’re lucky you don’t suffer from tail and whisker problems. I don’t think I can run track without shoes (rules, you know), but I did find a pair of new shoes online, on Ratazon, and they feel much more comfortable, yay! I’m glad you think it’s good that I’m exercising. I’m doing more than running, too. I’m bouncing, jumping, lifting, and chasing my tail in circles. (Only that last exercise made me dizzy.) Nope, Sissy and I don’t really fight. Because she’s the only one of my family I have left (sob!) and I’m the only one she has left (whimper!) and so we have to take care of each other!

  15. Julieta Says:

Hai again ratty :3 I used to play soccer before and I got hurt a lot :c It wasn’t a fun experience. I got hurt on my shin. Have you ever played sports?

  16. Leandro Says:

Hi Ratty I have gotten cramps before and they really hurt and what I do for my cramps is hydrate

  17. JAYDA THE CAT Says:

Hi Ratty! Unfortunately, I, too, was in this predicament. While playing with my ball of yarn, A kid flashed a red dot on the wall. Curious, I pounced on it, and HIT MY HEAD! QUESTION: When you were a baby mouse, did you play pawball

(P.S.I play YARNBALL with the neighborhood kittens!)

  18. The Rat Says:

Hai hai hai, Julieta, and Hi Hi Hi to you, Leandro and… she whose name shall not be spoken.

Julieta, I am so ratly sad you got hurt a LOT playing soccer! You’re so right, getting hurt is no fun. Lynne Jonell tells me she used to play soccer years ago, and she kept spraining her ankles so much that they’re still weak to this day. (So she can’t type with her toes, unlike ME.) Did you scrape your shin? Or just get it mashed? Either would HURT! And yes, I love to play sports. My favorite sport of all is pawball, but I also like ratbal, ratketball, and ratto polo (you play that in a pool.)

Hi Leandro, too bad you have gotten cramps, too! But I guess you know how I feel, huh? Anyway, I like your idea of hydrating. At first I thought you said “hydranting”, and so I went to the nearest fire hydrant to get a BIG drink, but when the guy opened it up for me, I got blasted halfway down the block by all the water! Anyway, Emmy explained it to me, and then she got me a nice big drink of water in a bottle cap, which was just the right size.

Okay, J..Ja.. Jaycat… I have been told that you are a vegan feline, so that makes it a a little better… but I’m still nervous. I have never, ever heard of a vegan cat. Are you sure you won’t change your mind someday, when a nice plump little rodent wanders in front of your BIG SHARP TEETH? Oh well, maybe when you hit your head on the wall it affected your pouncing ability. I shall hold to that thought. And in answer to your question, no, I did not play pawball as a baby mouse. I never even knew there was such a game, and I had never been out of the nest until the (gasp!) Big Hand grabbed me!
